Adapting for the future - growth and inequality in economics

20 November 2012

On the afternoon of 7 November an open discussion was held in Lancaster University Management School with the title of ‘Economics – Adapting for the Future – an afternoon of dialogue on the themes of Growth and Inequality in Economics’.

Jointly organised by Occupy Lancaster and the Economics Society and supported by the MA in Leadership for Sustainability, the event combined presentations by speakers and round-table discussions, finishing with a plenary and questions and comments from the floor.

Speakers addressing the theme of growth were James Meadway, senior economist at the New Economics Foundation, and Dr John Whittaker of the Economics Department.

Input on the theme of inequality came from Professor Ian Walker, Head of the Economics Department and Deborah Hargreaves, chair of the High Pay Centre and former Business Editor of the Financial Times.

The event was chaired by Professor Judi Marshall, Programme Director of the MA in Leadership for Sustainability.

The event was attended by over 80 people, a mixture of students, members of Occupy and others from outside the University interested in engaging in discussion with the Economics department, as well as staff from across the Lancaster University campus.

The round-table discussions were very animated and the questions that the groups developed to put to the panel were varied and challenging.

All groups involved expressed strong interest in continuing the process of dialogue.
